The Future of Rock Band Looks Bleak

The future of Rock Band and any other band game is looking pretty dismal. Sales for both Guitar Hero and Rock Band aren’t up to scratch. Even though Rock Band: The Beatles shifted 595,000 copies in the U.S in September it’s not a positive contributor to margins.  

Viacom published its quarterly earnings report a few days ago; Rock Band isn’t pulling its weight.

“Rock Band was a negative contributor to margins in the third quarter,” said Chief Financial Officer Tom Dooley. “We expect it to break even or be slightly profitable in the fourth quarter from a margin point of view. It really depends on how many units we sell in the holiday season.”

Guitar Hero sales were also lower than expected with the game shifting 499,000 units. As living rooms become full the appeal of a plastic guitar seems to be fading. It's time for something more innovative.
