Playstation Network Subscriptions Are On Their Way

2009-11-23 14:17

The above is true, but it’s not quite as bad as you might think.

Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kaz Hirai has confirmed that Sony will be building upon there free PSN service in 2010, offering premium services, the big difference is that they won’t be free.

That confirms some fans worst fears, a subscription service on the PSN.

"We will be building upon our current free [PSN] service offering with premium content and services to start the subscription model," Kaz said at a recent presentation.

The good news is that you can still play online for free, there will be no cost for the networks main use, however to experience the full thing you will have to pay a bit more.

I’m wondering what the service will include and how much it will cost. There have been no details on pricing as of yet, but expect to see them in the coming months.

Would you pay?

A lot of people don't seem to have read the statement properly, they think the ps3's current service will subject to subscription charges. This is not true, so if your happy with the free service sony currently provide, (ie. online gaming, PSstore, demo's etc) then you have nothing to fear. The premium content will probably be things like subscription based gaming, like warhawk, or Netflix, or sony's upcoming itunes style music download service. So if you don't mind paying an extra £40 a year (like XBL) for these types of service or whatever sony has in mind, then go ahead and pay. If your happy with what your getting, just do nothing and enjoy the current free service. Word is that Microsoft will be doubling their gold service to £80, and that's just to play games online. So if sony can offer it's current service for free as well as a load of other practical and useful "premium" services for as little as £40 a year, that doesn't sound like a bad price to pay.

If they had a system-wide voice chat I would think about it. But not for any features they have at the moment. And they better don't touch these.. Let's see what premium stuff they will have

I would never pay for the PSN unless it was offering something really good.
